Confronted by a constituent at a town hall meeting who said: "...and we have something that we as voters passed, amendment 2, we with over seventy-two percent of the population of Florida. Why are you not doing anything to make medical marijuana available to veterans? To help make these veterans, to give them an option for care? What can we count on you to do to make- and now we have the Trump administration come and say; because republicans always love states rights when it's conveniant for them, but now the Trump administration is coming and saying 'we're going to go in and force and fight the states that have legalized cannabis at the state level'. What can we count on you to do to fight against that to make sure that veterans have access to care, and alternative methods of care?"
Mast's response: "So number one there's a couple of things and state's rights are something that I speak about often, and I've spoke about them since the time of being a candidate. And I speak about state's rights even when they're things that most people would assume that I may not agree with the issue because I'm a republican. I still think that- as I said before, the most important time to stand for things can be when it's the most difficult time for you to stand for things. And this is not an issue where I differ on state's rights, this is something that I said even during, back my time campaigning. It's not the popular thing for me to say in a Republican primary, but that was my stance; if I believe in state's rights here, I believe in state's rights there as well"
Constituent: "What can we count on you to do, what action can we count on you to do?"
Mast: "So, here's the piece, when you're speaking about anything medically, number one there's a process for anything medically. It goes through uhh you know, the FDA and a medical process to determine whether it's something that's acceptable. Things need to go through these processes. I am absolutely a proponent for alternative forms of medicine within our VA that don't exist whether you're talking about our veterans having access to get chiropractic care or a great deal of other things. I think there are a lot of things that are not supported out there that should be"
